iPhone Storage Full? Here's How to Free Up Space Fast

6 min read  ·  Works on all iPhone models

When your iPhone storage fills up, everything slows down and you can't take new photos or install updates. Here's how to reclaim space fast — without losing anything important.

Step 1 — See What's Taking Up Space

1

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage

Tap Settings, then scroll down to General, then tap iPhone Storage.

2

Wait for it to load, then look at the biggest items

The bar at the top shows what categories are using the most space. Scroll down to see individual apps ranked by size.

Step 2 — Delete Apps You Don't Use

1

On the iPhone Storage screen, tap any app you don't use

You'll see exactly how much space it takes up.

2

Tap Delete App to remove it completely

Or tap Offload App to keep your data but remove the app itself — you can reinstall it later without losing progress.

Step 3 — Clear Out Photos and Videos

Videos take up the most space of anything on your phone. Try these:

Step 4 — Clear App Caches

1

Clear Safari browsing data

Go to Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. This frees up cached web data.

2

Delete large message attachments

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages → Review Large Attachments. Videos and photos sent to you via Messages can add up to gigabytes.

3

Delete downloaded podcasts and music

In the Podcasts or Music app, delete episodes and songs you've already listened to or no longer need offline.

Step 5 — Enable iCloud Photos

1

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Photos

Tap your name at the top of Settings to find the iCloud settings area.

2

Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage

This keeps smaller compressed versions on your phone and saves the full-quality originals in iCloud. You can still view all your photos — they just load from iCloud when needed.

Tips:
• Streaming music instead of downloading saves a huge amount of space
• WhatsApp and Snapchat build up large caches over time — reinstalling them clears it instantly
• Check Messages for large video attachments sent to you — these add up fast
